Der Petersdom – Mittelpunkt der katholischen Kirche und Wahrzeichen der Ewigen Stadt

Der prachtvolle Petersdom in der Vatikanstadt im Herzen Roms ist eine der größten, mit Sicherheit aber die bedeutendste katholische Kirche der Welt. Bereits vor seinem Bau existierte an seiner Stelle – dem Grab des Apostels und Vorläufers aller Päpste, Petrus – eine Basilika. Im Jahr 1506 wurde im Auftrag von Papst Julius II. mit dem Bau einer neuen Basilika begonnen: Am Bau des Petersdoms, der rund 120 Jahre andauerte, waren die berühmtesten Architekten und Handwerker wie Michelangelo und Raffael beteiligt. Die gigantischen Baukosten wurden unter anderem durch Ablassbriefe finanziert.

Zentraler Blickfang des Doms ist die Kuppel, die von vier Pfeilern gestützt wird. Am Fuße jedes Pfeilers finden sich Statuen eines Heiligen, auch des Heiligen Petrus. Pilger, die seine Füße küssen, erhoffen sich dadurch seinen Segen. Auch die Reliquien des Heiligen Petrus unter dem Hauptaltar können besichtigt werden. Vom Mittelbalkon des Petersdoms spendet der Papst den Segen „urbi et orbi“, aber auch der Name jedes neu gewählten Papstes wird von dort verkündet. Zudem zelebriert der Papst die wichtigsten Messen des Kirchenjahres im Petersdom.

Petersdom und –platz können kostenlos besichtigt werden. Beim Eintritt in den Petersdom ist es erforderlich, dass Schultern und Beine bedeckt sind. Auch die Kuppel kann besichtigt werden (Aufstieg zu Fuß oder mit dem Aufzug, kostenpflichtig).
