Construction of Pyhäkoski started in February 1941. Before building started a 4.5-kilometer railway between Hyrkä and Muhos was constructed. According to the original plan, Pyhäkoski was supposed to be ready as early as 1944, but the Continuation War slowed down the progress of the work.
The electricity museum located in the power plant presents the construction of the Oulujoki power plants from the 1940s to the 1960s. The museum exhibition concentrates on this time period and shows artefacts and pictures of the agricultural industries, construction sites and target areas for power plant construction, such as Pyhäkoski and Jylhämäki. The history of construction can also be explored in the museum with the help of video documentaries.
The power plant and the culturally and historically valuable residential area of Leppiniemi around it have been designed by architect Aarne Ervi.
