The heart of Riva del Garda still beats today under the Apponale Tower, which dominates the old port of the town from above. Every type of merchandise arrived here since the Middle Ages, from woolen clothes, to livestock and timber, then destined to continue the journey north, after passing customs.
In the arcades overlooking Piazza III Novembre there were exchange desks, freight forwarders, merchants' shops and several inns, ready to welcome travellers from the lower lake. Today, the same spaces are home to shops and clubs where guests and residents love to stroll. The aperitif in the square is in fact one of the town's unmissable rituals!
The charm of the port has even won over Franz Kafka who, after a holiday in Riva at the beginning of the 20th century, set the story The Hunter Gracchus right here.
