The church, which was built in 1131 and established as a hospital church in 1150, was under the control of the Benedictine monastery of Wörschweiler and combines late Romanesque, Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and modern style elements.
The church is one of the oldest monuments in the Palatinate and served as a place to stop and rest as well as to care for the sick. As early as the Middle Ages, it was a meeting point for pilgrims who made their way across the Palatinate via the northern route of the Palatinate Way of St. James on their way to Santiago de Compostela to the tomb of St. James in Spain.
The patron saints of the church, the apostles Philip and James, who are also the patrons of the cathedral in Santago, are an indication of its importance at this time.
From 1672, it served as a simultaneous church for both denominations.
It has been a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention since 1986.
