Kostel byl postaven podle projektu ruského architekta Petra Levického v letech 1930–1931 jako první pravoslavná stavba v Brně vůbec. Petr Levický, který patřil k prvním absolventům České vysoké školy technické v Brně, vyprojektoval stavbu za nulový honorář.
