Die Jesuitenkirche (richtiger Name: Pfarrkirche Heiliger Geist und St. Ignatius) ist neben der Heiliggeistkirche die größte und bedeutendste Kirche in Heidelberg und bildet den architektonischen Schwerpunkt des ehemaligen Jesuitenviertels in der Altstadt in unmittelbarer Nähe des Universitätsplatzes. Sie ist heute die Hauptkirche der römisch-katholischen Heilig-Geist-Gemeinde in Heidelberg.

Im Jahre 1685 fiel die Kurpfalz an den Kurfürsten Philipp Wilhelm (1685-90) von der kath. Linie Pfalz-Neuburg; er führte die kath. Kirche in die Pfalz zurück und rief die Jesuiten nach Heidelberg. Nach der Zerstörung Heidelbergs durch die Franzosen 1693 wollte Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm (1690-1716) mit Hilfe der Jesuiten aus Heidelberg ein Zentrum katholischer Aktivität machen. 1703 bis 1711 entstand das große Kollegiengebäude und unmittelbar danach begann der Kirchenbau. Der Kurfürst stellte Baugelände, Steine vom Dicken Turm des Heidelberger Schlosses, Bauholz aus den herrschaftlichen Wäldern, Sand aus dem Stadtgraben und kostenlose Fuhren zur Verfügung. Den Plan entwarf der Architekt Johann Adam Breunig (um 1660-1727). Die erste Phase der Bauarbeiten dauerte bis 1723.
1716 starb der Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm; sein Bruder und Nachfolger Karl Philipp stritt mit dem reformierten Kirchenrat um die 80. Frage des Heidelberger Katechismus und um das Langhaus der Heiliggeistkirche, in dessen Folge der Kurfürst 1720 Residenz und Regierung nach Mannheim verlegte. Erst 1749 konnten durch die Freigebigkeit des Kurfürsten Karl Theodor (1742-1799) die Bauarbeiten wieder aufgenommen werden. Bereits im folgenden Jahr war das Langhaus gedeckt, 1751 wurde die Fassade und die Wölbung vollendet; doch zogen sich die Arbeiten bis zum Spätherbst 1759 hin. Die Bauleitung hatte der Mannheimer Hofarchitekt Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti (1716-1782), der für die Heidelberger Jesuiten gleichzeitig das Seminarium Carolinum baute. Nach der Aufhebung des Jesuitenordens 1773 wurden von 1782 bis 1793 deren Aufgaben und Anstalten von den Lazaristen übernommen. In den folgenden Jahren diente die Kirche als Lazarett; seit 01.11.1809 ist sie die Pfarrkirche der kath. Gemeinde Heilig Geist.
Die Barockausstattung ist heute nicht mehr erhalten. Bewahrt wurde das Altargemälde des Kaulbachschülers Andreas Müller. In einer Gruft in der Nordostecke der Kirche ist der Kurfürst Friedrich der Siegreiche bestattet. Östlich der Kirchenportale liegt der Eingang zum ehemaligen Jesuitenkolleg. Ursprünglich umfassten die Einrichtungen der Jesuiten ein Gymnasium (heute Philosophisches Seminar) und das Seminarium Carolinum, das jetzt die Universitätsverwaltung nutzt.
