Farní kostel sv. Jakuba byl založen současně s městem Telčí, kde se nachází. Na jeho 60 metrů vysoké věži jsou dochovány dva vzácné zvony, Jakub a Marie.

Už ve 14. století postavili telčský kostel sv. Jakuba. Brzy však vyhořel a s ním i polovina náměstí. V polovině 15. století ho čekala rekonstrukce, kdy se z něj stala dvoulondí pozdně gotická stavba. Do podoby kostela pak zasáhli jezuité. Vznikly barokní přístavby, jako krypta, sakristie a kaple. Raritou je křížová cesta z roku 1737, která se nachází v zastřešené chodbě vedoucí od vedlejšího telčského zámku. Na konci chodby se nachází desky věnované obětem první a druhé světové války, které vyrobili v tamní Lidové malírně. Na konci 19. století byla většina přístavků zbořena a kostel dostal novogotický oltář.

Věž byla v minulém století ve špatném stavu a až do revoluce byla uzavřená. Nyní mohou turisté obdivovat Telč z vrchního ochozu. Na šedesátimetrovou věž vede čtyřicet kamenných a 105 dřevěných schodů. V minulosti tu bydlel hlásný.
