Protestantische Christen gab es in Wassenberg bereits in der Frühzeit der Reformation. Die Wassenberger Prädikanten (Wiedertäufer) besaßen regionale Bedeutung.
Eine evangelisch-reformierte Gemeinde mit ihrer Hofkirche ist 1652 urkundlich erwähnt. Gemäß den Bestimmungen des Westfälischen Friedens nach dem 30-jährigen Krieg (1618 bis 1648), durften nun auch Anhänger des evangelischen Glaubens Kirchen für ihre Gottesdienste in katholisch geprägten Regionen (und umgekehrt) errichten - wenn auch nur wenig auffällig.
An den Friedensverhandlungen in Münster waren auch Vertreter des französischen Königreiches beteiligt.
1773 wurde der Kirchturm errichtet und die heute noch vorhandene Glocke eingebaut. Wenige Jahre später setzte man den heute noch vorhandenen Posaunenengel auf die Spitze des Kirchturmes. Die in der Hofkirche stehende Orgel ist seit 1843 im Besitz der evangelischen Kirchengemeinde und stammt vermutlich aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. 1977 wurde die Kirche restauriert.
Tipp: Die Hofkirche liegt versteckt hinter dem Wohnhaus Roermonder Straße 8.
