Cemetery at St. Jakub in today's Jakub Square was in existence at the beginning of the 13th century. Like other city cemeteries, it was established within the walls, which prevented later enlargement. Capacity soon ceased to meet the needs of a growing city, so an interchange system was introduced: after 10 to 12 years from the funeral, the grave was opened, the remains removed and another dead buried in the same place. The contents of the original tombs were then deposited in special underground objects - osbarri or kostnice. In the ossuary are buried victims of medieval plague and cholera wounds, warfare of the Thirty Years War and Swedish siege. The ossuary has several chambers and corridors, one of them restored in the condition as the enthusiasts discovered it years ago, that is, the whole skewed to the ceiling of the bones. The experience of visiting the ossuary will also impress the impressive music, which was specially composed by Brno composer Miloš Štědroň.
The ossuary, together with the Labyrinth under the Green Market and the Mincmistrovské sklepy create a complex, which will give the visitors a look into the underground of the royal city.
