Schon bevor es die heutige Steinlekapelle gab, stand fast an gleicher Stelle ein altes kleines Gotteshaus. Die alte Kapelle wurde am 26. Dezember 1844 eingeweiht und war Eigentum von elf Gehöften. Sie war eine der vielen Stationen für die Pilger, die von Andechs zum gegeißelten Heiland in der Wies gewandert sind. Bis in die fünfziger Jahre wurden dort regelmäßig Rosenkränze gebetet.
Als später die Kapelle nicht mehr so stark genutzt wurde, sollte Ende der 60-er Jahre die Einrichtung verkauft und die baufällige Holzkapelle abgebrochen werden. Aus dem verkauf wurde nichts. die akpelle wurde neu gebaut. Eingeweiht wurde sie am 30. April 1978.
