While Sayda was first mentioned in documents in 1207, a document from 1209 is decisive for the church history of our town. It is highly likely that Sayda already had a small church in 1209.
1391 - New construction of the church
The three-sided closed choir room with its net ribbed vault spanning three bays has been preserved from this church. The church was given the name "Zu unserer lieben Frauen". It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
1502 - Construction of the nave as a tripartite hall
The late Gothic church towers majestically over the town and dominates the silhouette of the town from afar. The church originally had no tower. The tower was not added until 1702. It was 80 cubits high and was completely destroyed by the devastating fire of 1842. The church had already been ravaged by fires in 1599 and 1702. Despite the effects of heat and moisture, it has been preserved in its original form to this day.
1842 - the great town fire
The church also fell victim to the flames. In the early hours of September 1st, the fire quickly spread across the shingle roof and engulfed the tower, which collapsed along with the bells. The interior of the church looked very sad. A large part of the pews and the pulpit had been preserved, but all the windows had been smashed. All that was left of the altar was the bare stone that formed the table. The altar is said to have been a real ornament to the church. It had three paintings depicting the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ. The crucifixion painting was saved at the time, but had also suffered damage. The organ had become unusable.
The restoration of the church after the fire
On September 26, a temporary roof was erected to provide protection until the church was given a proper slate roof in October 1843. The tower was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished down to the ground. The foundation stone for a new tower was then laid on July 1, 1844. With the erection of the cross on September 16, 1847, the new building and the temporary restoration of the church was completed.
