The large late Gothic town church of Sayda, with its 62 m high tower, is visible from afar and actually seems too imposing for today's rather quiet little town. But Sayda was once an important trading town on the Bohemian Steig, an old salt road from Halle to Prague, which was protected by its (now no longer existing) castle.
From the town center, the route initially follows the outskirts, later going over meadows up to the Kreuztanne and through the Mühlholz past the idyllic flushing ponds into the legendary Mortelgrund, where the dwarfs are said to live. Back in the open, magnificent views of Sayda unfold. This hike repeatedly touches the Sayda Painter's Trail. Picture boards of local painters are set up where the artists captured their motifs.
At the marketplace in Sayda, from the bus stop, we walk up the street toward the town hall and tourist information, then continue straight ahead. At Roßplatz, we turn left before a parking lot, then continue straight ahead. Soon the hiking sign of a yellow bar comes into view. We pass the sports field and follow a small street that offers beautiful views. At the fork, turn right onto the Sayda Painter's Trail, which will accompany us briefly again during the hike. At a street intersection, we continue straight ahead and then immediately follow the yellow bar, turning diagonally left onto the path. The charming path runs along the houses of Friedebach. At a crossing, we use the footpath straight ahead. At another intersection, turn right; a sign pointing to "Café Dehme, Friedebach via Kreuztanne" may help orientation. Here, we leave the yellow bar. Meadows greet us on both sides. After the pond, we continue straight along the meadow path up to the forest. At the top, at the bench named
