After a visit to Altenstein Gardens, you will understand the true significance of Trinius’ words. The grounds cover 160 hectares and uniquely combine the features of small garden architecture with large, expansive spaces and landscaped flowerbeds from the 19th and 20th centuries. The garden and the rural landscape blend perfectly with each other. Numerous observation points give you an unobstructed view into the Werra Valley right through to the peaks of the Rhön Mountains. After a fire destroyed the interior of the castle in 1982, it is currently restored by the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten (Palace, Castle and Gardens Trust of Thuringia). On the circular trails through the landscaped park you can experience attractions such as the Ritterkapelle (Knight’s Chapel), Teufelsbrücke (Devil’s Bridge), Herzogsgrab (Duke’s Grave), Chinesisches Häuschen (Chinese House), Morgentor (Morning Gate), Altensteiner Höhle (Altenstein Cave) and the Luisenthaler Wasserfall (Luisenthal Waterfall).
Altenstein Castle and Gardens belong to the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten and the park is open daily.
