The Old Cemetery, Smederevo

The Old Cemetery developed around the medieval Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God, which dates to the 15th century and was built on an earlier sacred site. The church follows the architectural style of Moravian one-domed churches, with a compact triconch foundation plan. Its interior contains wall paintings added in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, including notable compositions depicting psalms on the western wall and apse. Icons created by painter Nikola Apostolović in the early 19th century further reflect the artistic traditions of the period following the liberation of the town from Ottoman rule.

Within the cemetery complex are several important structures, including the Chapel of Dina Mančić, built in 1884 by architect Aleksandar Bugarski in a neo-Byzantine style, as well as a memorial charnel house commemorating victims of a wartime explosion at the railway station in 1941. The grounds also contain the graves of many notable figures from Smederevo’s political, cultural, and intellectual history, such as Dimitrije Davidović and Ante Protić. Among the sculptural works, A. Augustinčić’s piece “For the Unhappy Jasmina” stands out as a significant artistic monument.

Nearby, on Karadjordje Hill, are the remains of former Jewish and German cemeteries, later transformed into a public park after the Second World War. Together, these elements make the Old Cemetery not only a burial ground but also a layered historical landscape reflecting the city’s diverse cultural and political past across several centuries.
