The Jewish cemetery in Essingen is located in Gartenstraße, just outside the village in the direction of Hochstadt. The Jewish community of Essingen was first mentioned in a document in 1548 and the cemetery was established in 1618, as can be read on the doorpost. For many centuries, it served as an association cemetery for almost 30 communities from the Palatinate.
With more than 1600 gravestones, it is the largest Jewish cemetery in the Palatinate in terms of area. In 1869, a new cemetery was opened opposite, where 265 graves can still be found today. The last burial there took place in 1939. The old grave inscriptions are predominantly in Hebrew characters. Many of the old gravestones have impressive ornamentation and the symbols on them often reflect the names or professions of the people buried.
