St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral in Brno (Petrov)

On the hill with the long-established name Petrov you will find not only an architectural jewel but also a quiet place for your relaxation in Denisovy sady, Studánka Park or Capuchin Gardens.

Inside the cathedral, visitors will be impressed by the unmistakable statue of the Madonna and Child from around 1300, the late Gothic Pieta, the Baroque altars and the pulpit. As you climb the tower of the cathedral, where you have a beautiful view of the city, do not forget to stop by the treasury, which houses worshiping textiles, monstrances, chalices and other church objects. The crypt of the cathedral hides the foundations of the church from the mid-12th century, including various younger reconstructions that bear witness to the beginnings of Christianity in Brno. There are occasional exhibitions, chamber music performances and spiritual-educational lectures.

The cathedral is also known for its bells, which ring noon at 11 am every day. They recall the event of 1645, when Brno (as the only town in Moravia) defended the Swedish siege during the Thirty Years' War. According to the legend, after three and a half months of siege, General Torstenson said that if he could not conquer the city before the noon rings at Petrov, he would end the siege. The defender of the defenders Louis Radouit de Souches then used deceit, let the noon ring for an hour earlier and the Swedish army withdrew.
