The first mention of Torre Apponale was in 1273. The historian Baruffaldi claims that it was ""the keep of a fort that defended the port"".
It probably got its name because it overlooked the part of the port facing Ponale", a small town across from it. The tower was originally shorter and the was very high above the ground. It was raised in 1552.
It is 34 m tall, with a foundation that is 3-4 metres underground. It houses the town bell, cast in 1532 to replace the older one, which had been out of use for years. Historically, it also served as a prison and, during WWI, as a guard post. There is the figure of an angel at the top, which has become the symbol of Riva.

You can admire the city of Riva and the blue waters of Lake Garda from atop the 165 steps.
