Founded around 1150 as a medieval castle. Founded around 1150 as a medieval castle, Schwarzenberg Castle was the administrative center of a large dominion. Centuries of building activities have shaped its reputation. After being converted into a hunting lodge by Elector August of Saxony in the mid-16th century, the complex took on its final form with the establishment of the Royal Saxon District Court in 1876. Today, the rooms house the collections of the town of Schwarzenberg. In addition to handcrafted iron and pewter, products of Erzgebirge lace art are on display. The museum tour leads into the 36-metre-high keep with former prison cells and a view of Schwarzenberg and the surrounding area.
