Eine Wasserburg, die dem edelfreien Geschlechte der Herren von De Trune gehörte, wurde um 1120 urkundlich erwähnt. Die Herren von Traun blieben zunächst unter den Ottokaren, dann unter den Babenbergern und später den Bischöfen von Passau bis 1620 im Besitze ihrer Stammburg. Wohl wegen einer niedrigen, d. h. nicht standesgemäßen Heirat stiegen sie zu Ministerialen ab. Nach turbulenten Zeiten schaffte es Ernst Graf von Abensperg und Traun 1664 das Schloss und die Herrschaft von Traun wieder in das Stammesgeschlecht zu bringen. Diese Familie ist bis heute im Besitz des gepflegten Schlosses. Es ist dem Land Oberösterreich verpachtet, das es für Kulturveranstaltungen nützt.
Das dreigeschossige Schlossgebäude wurde im Renaissancestil in der 2. Hälfte des 16. Jahrhundert errichtet und hatte früher auch einen vierkantigen Turm. Die Schauseite wurde 1725 barockisiert.
Der Zugang erfolgt über eine Vorburg mit einem Eingangstor. Diese dürfte auch die ursprüngliche Burganlage mit der Kapelle (Hl. Margaretha) sein. Schloss und Kapelle litten im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert stark unter Verfall mitunter teilweise durch einen Fliegerabsturz zerstört. Die Anlage wurde aber seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhundert grundlegend renoviert.
