Ottmanach wurde als einer der ersten Orte in Kärnten im Jahr 980 in einer Urkunde des Kaisers Otto II. als Königshube Otmanica urkundlich erwähnt.
Wie im 16. Jahrhundert üblich, wurde das Schloss als rechteckiger, innenhofloser Edelsitz errichtet. An eine durchgehende Querlaube in Form einer Vorhalle schließen im Erdgeschoss seitlich die Wirtschaftsräume an. Auch im Obergeschoss sind die Wohnräume aus einer Vorhalle erreichbar. 1930 erwarb Margarethe Bockelmann die Liegenschaft mit den dazugehörenden Ländereien. Ihr Sohn Rudolf und seine Frau Käthe führten das Gut Ottmanach bis zum Verkauf im Jahre 1957. Ihre Söhne Jürgen (Künstlername Udo Jürgens) und Manfred Bockelmann wuchsen im Schloss auf. Beide, der Liedinterpret und der Maler, sind international bekannt und gelten als Kulturbotschafter des Landes. Manfred Bockelmann hat in der Ortschaft Ottmanach einen Wohnsitz, in dem auch ein Atelier eingerichtet ist.
Das Schloss ist ein großer zweigeschoßiger Bau über einem unregelmäßigen, hakenförmigen Grundriss. Die Trakte sind mit hohen Walmdächern gedeckt.
