In the southernmost part of the Weinviertel lies Austria’s largest country estate, Schloss Hof. A stately Baroque palace with magnificent rooms, an ornate Baroque garden, and a lively
farmstead with themed gardens and around 240 animals come together today across more than 70 hectares to create a complete experience for visitors of all ages.
PALACE
The tour of the state rooms begins in the north wing with Prince Eugene’s former living quarters, which were redesigned for Emperor Joseph II. The rooms in the east wing, which offer a view of the magnificent garden, are devoted in detail to the life and work of the art-loving military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy. Passing through the Baroque chapel and the Neoclassical ballroom, the tour finally leads to Maria Theresa’s chambers in the south wing.
GARDEN
Baroque Garden & Themed Gardens
Seven terraces sloping down toward the March River are divided symmetrically by a central, vertical axis. Symmetrically laid-out flower beds, numerous sculptures, impressive fountains, as well as a labyrinth and a maze transform the garden—today as in the past—into an idyllic place for relaxing. Prince Eugene’s orangeries—two technically and architecturally impressive glasshouses with gardens in front—also invite visitors to linger.
In addition to the Baroque grounds, idyllic themed gardens invite visitors to explore: from the rose garden to the snack garden, and on to the jam and herb gardens. The Weinviertel farm garden showcases the region’s diversity.
As a “Natur im Garten” demonstration garden, all the gardens at Schloss Hof are maintained entirely using ecological methods.
ESTATE
The historic estate of Schloss Hof is one of the largest preserved farmsteads in Europe. Here, Baroque tradition, craftsmanship, and nature come together to create a vibrant experience of a very special kind. In faithfully reconstructed demonstration workshops—such as the basket-weaving workshop or the schnapps distillery—guests can immerse themselves in traditional crafts. Around 240 animals—from majestic Lipizzaner horses to the rare white Baroque donkey and old Austro-Hungarian domestic breeds—bring the historic stables, pastures, and petting zoo to life.
experience
The Water Adventure Trail, which opened in 2025, combines history with fun and games. Discover historic water systems and actively experience how water flows, is dammed, and is moved. Shady oases of tranquility under the trees invite you to relax. But the estate has even more exciting adventures and thrilling attractions in store for the whole family: a balance bike course, a wooden marble run, adventure playgrounds, and two interactive adventure trails with activity stations centered on the history and trades of the Schloss Hof estate.
SPECIAL EXHIBITION 2026: “Playful Symmetry—The Baroque Garden as a Work of Art”
March 7, 2026–November 2, 2026
In this year’s special exhibition at Schloss Hof, the world of Baroque garden art unfolds as an impressive interplay of nature, art, and technology. What at first glance appears to be a harmonious garden is in reality a precisely staged total work of art, characterized by order, aesthetics, symmetry, and botany.
