Das Schloss Aarwangen (1339 erstmals erwähnt) hatte den wichtigen Fluss übergang zu bewachen und war Stammsitz der Ritter von Aarwangen, zähringisch- kybur gischer Dienstleute. 1433–1803 sassen bernische Landvögte auf dem Schloss. Das heute wieder den Zustand von 1643 widerspiegelnde Schloss ist, zusammen mit dem nahen Langenthal, Amtssitz des Amtes Aarwangen.
