Die Arnsburg, gelegentlich Arensburg genannt, thront als beeindruckende Ruine einer Höhenburg auf 293 m ü. NN nahe dem thüringischen Dorf Seega. Auf einem pittoresk über dem Wipperdurchbruchstal gelegenen Hang bietet sie einen historischen Anblick. Der Name könnte möglicherweise auf "Adlerburg" zurückgehen, doch bleibt dies Spekulation. Die geschichtliche Relevanz der Arnsburg reicht bis ins Jahr 1116 zurück, als sie in den Pegauer Annalen im Kontext der Streitigkeiten zwischen Kaiser Heinrich V. und den sächsischen Fürsten auftaucht. Angenommen wird, dass sie damals möglicherweise eine Reichsburg darstellte und 1118 neben der Reichsburg Kyffhausen zum ersten Mal zerstört wurde. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wanderten Besitzrechte und Einfluss: Die Landgrafen von Thüringen hielten ab 1229 die Zügel, gefolgt von den unter Albrecht II. belehnten Grafen von Hohnstein im Jahr 1293. Später, im Jahr 1356, wurden die Burg und ihre Rechte an die Grafen von Schwarzburg übergeben. Diese übergaben 1433 ihren Nachfolgeanspruch an die Grafen zu Stolberg. Nicht zu vergessen, die erneute Verpfändung der Anlage an die Herren von Vippach im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert, als die Burganlage bereits beträchtlich gelitten hatte. Doch die Arnsburg sollte weiterhin Widrigkeiten trotzen. Auch nach ihrer Zerstörung während des Bauernkrieges im Jahr 1525 bewahrte sie ihre Würde als Bewohner noch bis 1547 in ihr Schutz suchten. Kurz nach der letzten Erwähnung im Jahr 1599 trat sie in die stille Welt der Vergangenheit ein. Die klein wirkende Anlage der Arnsburg, mit einer Dimension von 60 × 25 Metern, bezieht ihre Position auf dem südöstlich blickenden Ausleger des Schlossberges und zeigt sich gesichert durch einen Halsgraben, weitere Gräben und Wallace. Beeindruckend hebt sich am höchsten Punkt des Burgareals durch seine architektonischen Reste ein runder Bergfried ab, welcher sich wohl einst stolz über den Halsgraben erhob. Heute sind neben dem runden, jetzt verschütteten Bergfriedstumpf, Fragmente der Ringmauer sowie spitzbogige Arkaden zu sehen. Sie können ohne Zweifel den Grafen von Schwarzburg zugeschrieben werden, naheliegend durch ihre verblüffende Ähnlichkeit zu Bauwerken in der Burg Straußberg. Der Blick reicht weit über das Tal der Wipper. Am Fuße der Anlage diente eine Papiermühle, die 1478 Erwähnung findet, sowohl als Getreide- und Sägemühle. Diese Mühle mag als leises Echo des geschäftigen Lebens gelten, das einst im Schatten der Burg herrschte. So erzählt jede Mauer, jeder Graben und jede verlorene Ecke des Areals von einer lebhaften Vergangenheit, die wechselvollen Schicksalen Ausdruck verleiht – von königlichem Interesse bis zum Bauernkrieg, vom Mächtigen bis zum einfachen Müller, hat die Arnsburg die Zeitalter strukturiert und überdauert. Für Wanderer auf der Seega-Arnsburg-Ilmtal-Runde ist es nur ein kurzer Abstecher vom Weg bis zur Burganlage.
