The castle in the middle of the vineyards
Rosenburg Castle or the nobles of Bernang were first mentioned in 1210. The owners of Rosenburg Castle were the nobles of Bernang, the Behems or Böhm, the Abbey of St. Gallen, the knightly dynasty of Rosenberg and the Muntprat. From 1518 to 1798, about two dozen senior bailiffs and the prince abbey of St. Gallen lived at the Rosenburg. Under the leadership of Dr. med. Johann Jakob Ritz, a physician, 19 Berneck citizens bought Rosenburg Castle in 1811. The hated castle buildings were then immediately sold for demolition. In 1817, the son of the same name took over the magnificent lookout pulpit on the Rosenberg. The esteemed doctor, scribe and ammann had the graceful bell tower built on the garden house, which he also equipped with a clockwork. Even today the chime of the bell can be heard. From the Ritz family, the Schlössli Rosenberg, as the former garden house was now called, passed to the village physician Dr. med. Julius Custer. The heirs of his daughters then sold the Schlössli in 2000 to Peter Schmid, Weingut am Rosenberg, Berneck.
