Trebsen entwickelte sich zu einem der größten Rittergüter in Sachsen. Mit über 1.000 ha Grundbesitz und den Zinseinnahmen von 2 Städten und über 10 Dörfern dokumentiert sich der Reichtum im Bau einer neuen Schlossanlage.
Um 1494 erwarb Georg von Saalhausen das Trebsener Rittergut und begann mit dem Schlossbau. Zeugnis aus dieser Bauphase sind die qualitätsvollen Zellengewölbe in den Erdgeschossräumen. Mit dem Rittergutskauf im Jahr 1521 wurde unter Hans von Minkwitz das Schloss als vierflüglige Anlage fertig ausgebaut. Reger Besitzwechsel erzeugte weitere bauliche Veränderungen.
1945 wurden über 200 Soldaten der Roten Armee in den historischen Räumen einquartiert, was u. a. die fast völlige Zerstörung des einmaligen Gerichtsarchivs zur Folge hatte. Anschließende Plünderungen der Ausstattung führten schließlich bis zum Abriss der Dachstühle über dem West- und Nordflügel.
Zu Zeiten der DDR ging das Schloss in das Eigentum des Volkes über. Die Räumlichkeiten des Ost- und des Südflügels wurden als Wohnungen genutzt.
1992 gründete sich der Förderverein für Handwerk und Denkmalpflege e. V. – Schloss Trebsen und zog im Schloss ein. Hauptinhalt dieses Fördervereins war der denkmalgerechte Wiederaufbau des Schlosses und die Nutzung desselben als Bildungseinrichtung für die Denkmalpflege und als kulturelle Begegnungsstätte. Mit der Nutzbarmachung von Räumlichkeiten im Schloss und im Rittergut Trebsen war es dem Verein möglich, seine Angebote auf kulturellen Gebiet zu erweitern. Neben Konzert- und Theateraufführungen haben sich Jazz- und Bluesveranstaltungen zu einem festen Bestandteil der regionalen Kulturlandschaft entwickelt.
