The Göppingen Castle was built between 1559 and 1568 by Aberlin Tretsch on behalf of Duke Christoph von Württemberg, after the duke had undergone a successful cure in the later „Christophsbad“, i.e. in the Göppingen Sauerbrunnen.
The castle owes its origin to Duke Christoph von Württemberg, who, after a successful spa treatment at the Sauerbrunnenbad in Güppingen, arranged for a princely castle to be built in the city. Thus, between 1556 and 1568, a representative four-wing Renaissance palace was built. The sculptural masterpieces on two portals and the Vine Staircase in the south-western staircase tower are worth seeing and can be visited on guided tours of the town. 71 steps out of a total of 79 of the spiral staircase are overgrown by a vine carved in stone, in the tendrils of which 13 animals are depicted. Today, the castle houses the district court.
The former castle garden, which was converted into a park in 1960, adjoins the north wing of the castle. The Staufer Fountain, designed by the Hohenstaufen artist Hermann Schwahn, is a reminder of the town's great historical past. The three Staufer lions carrying a water basin on their backs refer to the coat of arms of the Staufer Dukes of Swabia.
