Das Hambacher Schloss (früher Kästenburg, im Volksmund auch Maxburg) beim Ortsteil Hambach der rheinland-pfälzischen Stadt Neustadt an der Weinstraße wurde im Mittelalter als Burg erbaut und in der Neuzeit schlossartig ausgestaltet. Es gilt wegen des 1832 dort ausgerichteten Hambacher Festes als wichtigstes Symbol der deutschen Demokratiebewegung, neben der Frankfurter Paulskirche.

Auf dem Hambacher Schloßberg bei Neustadt steht die ehemalige Kästenburg (Kastanienburg), sie wurde wahrscheinlich Anfang des 11. Jahrhunderts von dem kaiserlichen Geschlecht der Salier auf den Resten einer spätkarolingischen Fliehburg erbaut.

Der spätere Besitzer, Graf Johann I. Bischof von Speyer, vermachte die Burg dem Hochstift von Speyer.

Vier Jahrhunderte lang war die Anlage ständiger Aufenthaltsort der Bischöfe von Speyer, bis sie 1525 vom "Nußdorfer Bauernhaufen" besetzt und ausgeplündert wurde.

Nur wenige Jahre später wurde die wiederaufgebaute Kästenburg von Truppen des Markgrafen Albrecht von Brandenburg erneut zerstört.

Notdürftig instantgesetzt überstand die Burg den 30 jährigen Krieg fast unbeschadet, ehe sie während des Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg von Französischen Truppen endgültig zerstört wurde.

Nach der Neuaufteilung des Reiches im Jahre 1815 kam der Bayrische Staat in den Besitz der mittlerweile wertlosen Kästenburg.

Um ihr Schloß vor dem Untergang zu retten, konnten Neustadter Bürger im Jahr 1823 die Ruine für 625 Gulden vom Bayrischen Königreich erwerben.

Am 27. Mai 1832 schrieb das Hambacher Schloß erneut Geschichte als 30000 Menschen zum Schloßberg hinaufzogen um unter der schwarz-rot-goldnen Flagge für die Freiheit und Einheit Deutschlands zu demonstrieren.

Maximilian von Bayern erhielt 1842 von den königstreuen Pfälzern das Schloß als Hochzeitsgeschenk. Der Kronprinz begann mit dem Umbau seiner "Maxburg" zu einem neugotischen Schloß, das jedoch wegen Geldmangels nie vollendet wurde.

Der damalige Landkreis Neustadt erwarb 1952 das Hambacher Schloß um es als Denkmal der deutschen Demokratie zu gestalten.

Die ehemalige Kästenburg wurde für sehr viel Geld zu einer "Touristen-Burg" umgebaut, auf der nur schwer die Burgenromantik der altehrwürdigen Pfälzischen Ruinen zu spüren ist.
Das Hambacher Schloss ist täglich geöffnet (außer 24.12.), die Ausstellung im Inneren sowie die Führungen sind kostenplichtig.
