Hambach Castle, also known as Kästeburg (Kastanienburg) or Maxburg, was built in the 11th century and expanded into a castle in the 13th/14th century. In the 19th century, the walls were raised and crenellated with pointed arch windows. On May 27, 1832, 30,000 liberal-minded men and women marched up to the castle to take part in the first political rally ("Hambach Festival") in Germany. This was also the first time that the black, red and gold German flag flew over the country.
From the main railway station in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, we walk west on Bahnhofstraße to Landauer Straße, keep left, cross the tracks on Schillerstraße and let the green grapevine of the German Wine Route hiking trail guide us past Neustadt. We keep right in front of the railroad museum (Alter Viehberg) and turn right along Waldstraße until we reach Frühlingstraße. We walk along this road past the vineyard on the left, turn right at the end onto Dr.-Wirth-Straße and follow Limburgstraße to the left and Erschigweg straight ahead. After 200 m, we keep right at the fork and walk left on Römerweg to the Seminargarten playground in Neustadt-Hambach. Here we turn right onto the "Seminargarten" road and left onto the "Scharfeneck" road. At the end of the latter, we briefly follow Enggasse to the right, turn left onto Klosterstraße and Freiheitsstraße and then leave the village on the right onto Kirchbergweg. We walk along this path around the 313 m high, wooded Heidelberg and turn left
