Donzdorf Castle is the town's landmark and historical center. It was built in 1568 by order of Hans von Rechberg zu Hohenrechberg and is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in the district of Göppingen. The three-storey rectangular building with its four octagonal corner towers and high pitched roof still gives the complex an impressive appearance today.
The castle has been rebuilt and extended several times over the centuries. The conversion in the 18th century was particularly influential, when the Munich court architect François de Cuvilliés added rococo elements to the building. This was followed in the mid-19th century by neo-Gothic alterations by the Württemberg chief architect Ludwig Friedrich Gaab.
To the south of the palace is the approximately four-hectare palace garden, which was initially laid out in 1764 as a baroque garden in the French style. In the 19th century, it was transformed into an English landscape garden, which to this day invites visitors to stroll and linger.
After being acquired by the town of Donzdorf in 1987, the castle was extensively renovated and opened as an administrative and cultural center in 1995. Today it houses the town council and the music school.
Donzdorf Castle is a member of the "Palaces, Castles, Gardens of Baden-Württemberg" network - a living monument that combines history, architecture and culture.
