Schon von weit her ist die Burg für Besucher sichtbar, stolz thront sie auf einem Felsrücken über der gleichnamigen Stadt. Das genaue Gründungsjahr der Burg ist nicht bekannt, 1084 wird sie erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die ältesten heute noch erhaltenen Grundzüge der Burg stammen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, wie die alte Wehrmauer und der so genannte Saigerturm, welche Heute integriert im Torhaus kaum mehr als solches zu erkennen sind. Der große Bergfried, gleichfalls aus dieser Zeit stammend, kann von Besuchern selbständig erkundet und bestiegen werden. Das heutige Erscheinungsbild der Burg geht auf das 17. Jahrhundert zurück. Die Anlage setzt sich aus einer kleineren Hauptburg und zwei weiträumigeren Vorburgen, welche durch einen Torbau getrennt werden, zusammen. Den Besuchern öffnet sich von der Burganlage ein Blick über Ranis und weit in das Schiefergebirge hinein. Wanderer erreichen über Wanderwege aus Krölpa oder Pößneck aus den Ort Ranis.
