From forest trails over wide meadows and rocky heights with views to old noble residences, this hike has a lot to offer. In the Buchenberg nature reserve, we explore the site of a former limestone quarry where rare orchid species bloom. At the foot of Brandenstein Castle, we visit a bison enclosure, and at the destination awaits the imposing Ranis Castle. In the cave beneath the castle walls, the first humans already lived in the Stone Age.
With your back to the bus stop in Ranis, we go left and at the intersection also left, uphill towards the Thuringian Species Protection Center. Just before we arrive at the top, we turn left towards the water reservoir and take the path straight on along the fenced garden. Passing the memorial stone for the resistance fighter Magnus Poser, we follow the path and come to a paved road in the valley, into which we turn left. It ends at a cross path where we have a view of Brandenstein Castle. Here we turn left and reach an asphalt road. To the left we see Ranis Castle, straight ahead the castle, but we follow the asphalt road to the right down into the valley, cross a stream and immediately turn right onto the path. It leads us above the stream and flows into a field path, in which we sharply turn left. Past benches, we continue with a wide view across the fields.
