Pepelski Bridge, also known as Ash Bridge (Пепелски мост), is a historic stone bridge spanning the Cherna River in the Smolyan area. It is associated with the Vrajikovo district and carries cultural memory linked to the former “Ash Mahallesi” neighbourhood. Today it remains a local landmark reflecting the layered history of the region.
Pepelski Bridge is a traditional stone bridge crossing the Cherna River in the Raykovo area of Smolyan. The structure is closely tied to the historical development of the surrounding neighbourhood, which was once known as “Ash Mahallesi” (meaning “Ash Quarter”), a name that reportedly originated after the destruction of the settlement during the Ottoman period. The bridge’s alternative name, “Ash Bridge,” preserves this historical reference in local memory.

Architecturally, the bridge reflects typical construction methods used in mountainous Bulgarian regions, where stone arch designs were favoured for their durability and ability to withstand river flow in narrow valleys. Situated in a dense urban-river landscape, it connects different parts of the Cherna Reka area and stands as a modest but historically meaningful structure within Smolyan’s layered urban fabric.

Public transport

Smolyan is served by regional bus connections from larger cities such as Plovdiv and Sofia, with arrivals typically at the main bus station. From there, local bus routes and taxis provide access to the Raykovo district, where the bridge is located. The area is relatively close to the city centre and is well integrated into Smolyan’s local transport network.

Directions

From the centre of Smolyan, Pepelski Bridge can be reached by a short drive or a 15–25 minute walk depending on the starting point. Visitors should head towards the Raykovo district along ul. “Byalo more” and follow the route towards the Cherna River valley. The bridge is located within the Vrajikovo area, near residential streets and the river crossing.

Parking

Parking is available in nearby residential streets in the Raykovo district and along ul. “Byalo more”. Spaces are generally informal and may be limited, but short-term parking is usually possible within walking distance of the bridge. Visitors are advised to park considerately due to the residential nature of the area.
