Although the current structure largely dates from the beginning of the 17th century, historians believe the crossing itself originates from Roman times. Nearby remains of the old Roman road can still be seen on the northern slope above the bridge. This ancient route crossed the Rhodope Mountains and connected important settlements such as Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv), Nicopolis ad Nestum, and the Aegean ports further south. During the Ottoman era, the bridge continued to play an important role as part of caravan and tax-collection routes moving through the mountains.
The bridge’s isolated location adds greatly to its atmosphere. Surrounded by dense woodland and mountain scenery, it remains a quiet reminder of the strategic importance of these mountain passages over many centuries. Until the Balkan Wars in 1912, the bridge even lay directly on the border between Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, with one half considered Bulgarian territory and the other Ottoman.
