The Friendship Bridge spans the border between Grosbliederstroff, France, and Kleinblittersdorf, Germany.
The close bond between the two towns—Grosbliederstroff in France and Kleinblittersdorf in Germany—which have belonged together for centuries and are separated only by a river, a bond that even political circumstances could not permanently sever, is symbolized by the Friendship Bridge, built in 1993. In 1880, a bridge connected the two towns for the first time, replacing the ferry service that had been in use until then. Destroyed at the start of World War II, the bridge was rebuilt in 1964. From 1964 to 1993, the Kummersteg spanned the Saar between Groß- and Kleinblittersdorf: a temporary solution. Afterward, the Kummersteg was simply dismantled and relocated to the Upper Saar. For years after the war, there was at times no bridge at all between Großblittersdorf and Kleinblittersdorf. The current Friendship Bridge was built in 1993 as a pedestrian-only bridge and stands as a symbol of the turbulent relations between Germany and France and the bond between the two towns that transcends political circumstances.
