Fatih Bridge is a 15th-century Ottoman stone bridge in Edirne, built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II. It originally connected the imperial palace area with the city across the Tundzha River. The bridge forms part of Edirne’s historic network of Ottoman infrastructure linked to the former palace complex.
Fatih Bridge (Fatih Köprüsü) was constructed in 1452 under Sultan Mehmed II, shortly before the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. It formed an important part of the imperial infrastructure of Edirne, which at the time served as a major Ottoman capital. The bridge linked the Sultan’s Palace area, near the Adalet Tower (Adalet Kasrı), with the urban centre, facilitating movement between administrative, military, and residential zones.
Built in traditional Ottoman stone masonry, the bridge reflects early Ottoman engineering techniques adapted to the river conditions of the Tundzha. Its strategic position highlights the importance of Edirne as a well-planned imperial city, where bridges, palaces, and administrative buildings were integrated into a coordinated urban system. Although parts of the wider palace complex have not survived, Fatih Bridge remains an important architectural and historical link to the early Ottoman imperial period.
