Bey’s Mug Bridge is a historic single-arch stone bridge spanning the Cherna Reka in Smolyan, connecting the upper part of the town with the Stanevska neighbourhood. Dating back to at least 1716, it is considered one of the oldest surviving bridges of its kind in the Rhodope Mountains. The bridge is closely associated with local Ottoman-era history and traditional settlement patterns.
Bey’s Mug Bridge, known locally as Beĭskiyat kyupriya, is a stone arch bridge built across the Cherna Reka, forming an important crossing point within the historic urban fabric of Smolyan. An inscription on the structure dates its existence to 1716, making it one of the oldest documented bridges in the Rhodopes. According to local tradition, it was constructed through the efforts of Seimat Khatib Vel-Za Oglu, who initially financed the project using his own property near Yurukovo Dere, later seeking additional support from the local population after flood damage interrupted construction.

The bridge is traditionally linked to the site of the former inn “Brahma Bey Konak”, reflecting its historical role as part of a broader network of travel, trade, and lodging infrastructure during the Ottoman period. It is a typical single-arch stone structure, demonstrating the engineering techniques used in mountain river crossings, where durability and simplicity were essential. Following restoration works in the 1970s, parts of the approach were adapted with stepped paving and the installation of a wooden railing, helping preserve the structure while maintaining pedestrian access.

Public transport

Smolyan is accessible by regional bus services from major Bulgarian cities such as Plovdiv and Sofia, with arrivals at the central bus station. From there, local buses and taxis provide connections to the Stanevska district and surrounding neighbourhoods. The bridge is located within the urban area and is reachable using Smolyan’s local transport network.

Directions

From Smolyan city centre, Bey’s Mug Bridge can be reached by a short drive or a walk of approximately 20–30 minutes depending on the starting point. Visitors should head towards the Stanevska neighbourhood along roads following the Cherna Reka valley. The bridge is located at a river crossing point where upper and lower parts of the town are connected by pedestrian access.

Parking

Parking is available in nearby residential streets in the Stanevska area and along access roads leading towards the Cherna Reka. Spaces are informal and limited but generally sufficient for short visits. Visitors are advised to park considerately due to the residential and narrow street layout around the bridge.
