Zwinger, Semperoper, Hofkirche, Schinkels Altstädter Wache - der Platz ist umgeben von spektakulären Bauwerken. In der Mitte des Theaterplatzes thront das Reiterstandbild des ehemaligen sächsischen Königs Johann, in seinem Rücken liegt das eindrucksvolle Hauptportal der Semperoper. Hier war früher das Hoftheater - deswegen auch Theater- und nicht Opernplatz.
