Neustrelitz was founded in 1733 by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich III of Mecklenburg Strelitz as a new residential town after the original residence Strelitz had burned down. The center of the new town is the one-hectare square market square with its eight-pointed street star. The unique city layout is modeled on an ideal Italian city and goes back to plans by the Brunswick master builder Christoph Julius Löwe. The redesign took place in 2003/04 and takes into account various historical references. The roundel in the center of the square is decorated by 32 small-leaved ash trees and a water feature with 36 fountains.
The market is a popular meeting place in the historic city center, where residents and visitors find many restaurants and cafes. At the junction of the pedestrian zone at the town hall is the tourist and national park information office. In a few minutes you can walk to the castle garden and the city harbor. A great impression of the marketplace is given by a view from the 45 meter high observation deck of the town church tower.
