Der Marktplatz liegt im Herzen Freudenstadts und ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt.
Der Grundriss wurde dem Mühlebrettspiel nachempfunden. Der Marktplatz wird von Straßen durchkreuzt und ist somit in drei Teile gegliedert. Sie werden als Oberer Marktplatz, Unterer Marktplatz und Postplatz bezeichnet. Auf dem Oberen Marktplatz finden die unterschiedlichsten Märkte statt. Die angrenzenden Gebäude rund um den Marktplatz weisen Arkaden auf. Ursprünglich wurden die Ecken mit Winkelhaken-Gebäuden versehen. Heute gibt es noch zwei davon, die Stadtkirche und den Schickhardtbau in dem die Polizei untergebracht ist.
1999 wurde der Untere Marktplatz neu gestaltet und bietet heute mit den 50 Wasserfontänen und vielen Grünflächen Platz zum Ausruhen, Entspannen und den Tag genießen.
Um den ganzen Marktplatz säumen sich Restaurants, Cafés und zahlreiche Einzelhandelsgeschäfte, welche die Menschen zu einem Einkaufsbummel unter den Arkaden einladen.
