Neben der Seelsorge war die gymnasiale Bildung eine der Kernaufgaben der Jesuiten. Zwischen 1656 und 1659 errichteten sie den zweiflügeligen Bau, in dessen Obergeschoss sich der Kongregationssaal befand.
Nach Aufhebung des Jesuitenordens 1773 diente das Erdgeschoss als Getreideschranne, im Obergeschoss war die Kordon-Wachstube untergebracht und im obersten Stock das als "Comedien-Stadel" bezeichnete Stadttheater.
Mit dem Mauritia-Febronia-Gymnasium knüpften die Englischen Fräulein in den 1960er Jahren nochmals kurz an die gymnasiale Tradition des Gebäudes an und erinnerten durch die Namensgebung an die verdienstvolle Förderung ihres Instituts und auch des Jesuitenkollegs durch die Herzogin. Heute sind darin die Volkshochschule und die Städtische Sing- und Musikschule untergebracht.
