In Bragança, the men responsible for the analysis and approval of local matters and justice issues would gather at the House of the Council, a medieval-style building resulting from architectural revivalism, which would come to be known as the Domus Municipalis.
Apparently, one of the main objectives of this construction was the effective utilization of a spring and the collection of rainwater, which was of crucial importance in a walled settlement. For these reasons, this building incorporates a well-crafted cistern, with a stone vault reinforced by three corner arches, well-configured and capable of collecting rainwater from the exterior roof. Its structure is slightly elevated as it is not completely buried. Certain elements of the construction indicate the existence of annexes with roofs that also channeled rainwater into the cistern. Nevertheless, its facades allow for an upper level, entirely occupied by a spacious meeting hall. The illumination occurs in continuous succession from windows with semicircular arches, and the pentagonal perimeter is internally lined with a stone bench.
Due to its functional aspects, it's not surprising that in historical documents it is sometimes referred to as "Cistern" and other times as "House of the Council."
In the year 1936, under the supervision of the Directorate-General for Buildings and National Monuments, this unique specimen of Romanesque civil architecture, although situated in a time when the influence of Gothic architecture was thriving, was reconstructed.
