Near the city of Bragança, we find the "Ponte das Carvas," a bridge that connects the banks of the Sabor River. It was part of the route of the Via XVII of the Antonine Itinerary and, more recently, connected the city of Bragança to the village of Outeiro.
With a horizontal deck, the bridge rests on three irregularly sized pointed arches. The two bridge piers are reinforced with buttresses, with triangular cutwaters. One of the cutwaters is triangular, while the other is rectangular. The abutments are also reinforced, with the one on the West bank having a projecting buttress with triangular cutwater, while the one on the East bank has a rectangular reinforcement on the downstream side.
The deck is paved with cobblestones, and the parapets are made of schist masonry. The various gargoyles on the faces serve as water outlets for draining onto the pavement.
