A Vár-hegy történelme

Régészeti kutatások alapján a hegy első lakói a vaskori kelták voltak, de az őskori erődítmény nyomai napjainkra szinte teljesen eltűntek a középkori építkezések következtében. Először a Bél nemzetség épített várat a  a Vár-hegyre az Árpád-ház kihalása utáni belviszályos időszakban, ezt néhány évtizeden belül, a királyi hatalom megerősödésének következtében felhagyták. A várhelyet 1460-ban a husziták foglalták el és alakították át: a központi terület homokkődombját ekkor faragták a ma is látható meredek, csonkakúp formájúra. A hegyoldal lefejtése során kinyert anyagból készült el a ma is tekintélyes méretű belső sánc. Ezeken felül a hegy nyugati peremén kisebb, árokkal védett, előretolt védművet is építettek, melyből a fővárból nem látható völgyi területeket, a lehetséges támadási útvonalakat tudták ellenőrizni. A fa-föld szerkezetű vár elkészültének évében, harcra utaló nyomok nélkül került át Mátyás király kezébe, és később sem volt harcászati jelentősége.

Kilátás

A Sajó völgyéből 100 méterre kiemelkedő hegy tetejéről három irányba is remek kilátást élvezhetünk: kelet felé a Putnoki-dombság, észak felé a Gömör-Szepesi-érchegység, nyugat felé a Gömöri-erdőhát és a Vajdavár-vidék vonulatai tűnnek fel, alattunk közvetlenül a Sajó és a Hangony patak kanyarognak.

Directions

Sajónémeti, posta buszmegállótól jelzetlen utakon juthatunk fel a földvárhoz. Északkeleti irányban indulunk el a Szabadság utcán, 170 métert megtéve jobbra a Dózsa György utcába fordulunk. Az utolsó házakat is elhagyva, immáron földúton, a régi pincesor mellett haladunk tovább még 450 métert, majd egy éles balkanyart véve érjük el a Várhegy tetejére vezető földutat, melyet 350 méter hosszan követünk célunkig (1,3 km, 90 m szintemelkedés).
