Founded in the 13th century, Mystras takes the name of the mountain on which it is located (Mytzithras). Originally it was a fortress wanted by Prince William II Villehardouin, prince of Achea. The fort was successively conquered by the Byzantines, Ottomans and Venetians before it was finally abandoned in 1832. A journey through time equal to that of Monemvasia, Mystras testifies to the medieval reality of the late Byzantine period. The Monastery of Panagia Perivleptos contains some of the rarest examples of Byzantine art in Greece. Houses, temples, churches and walls of fortifications, make it a unique and characteristic historichal site that represents different historical time periods.
