The Jelling Rune Stone

There are two rune stones in Kongernes Jelling. The rune stone of King Gorm contains the first mention of a Danish king, which is why the place is considered the cradle of Denmark.

The two rune stones of Kongernes Jelling were built by the kings Gorm and Harald Blue Tooth. The latter is known to all of us through the "Bluetooth" technology. The smaller rune stone was built by King Gorm around 935 in honor of his wife Thyra. The larger rune stone from Jelling represents a figure of Christ and an animal figure and was erected by the son of Thyra and Gorm, namely Harald Blue Tooth. Since it shows the oldest representation of Christ in Denmark, it is also known as Denmark's baptismal font. The church built next to the rune stones was built around 1100. A museum was built right next to the church and the stones. Together they make up Kongernes Jelling, the Jelling of the Kings. Admission to the museum is free, the rune stones of Kongernes Jelling can also be viewed outside of the opening hours.
