Archaeological excavations have revealed a monumental three-aisled structure featuring extensive mosaic floors covering thousands of square metres. These mosaics are among the finest examples of early Christian art in southeastern Europe, displaying intricate geometric designs, symbolic motifs, and a remarkable variety of birds and other creatures. The bird mosaics are particularly famous, with dozens of species represented in highly detailed compositions that reflect both artistic excellence and Christian symbolism.
The basilica remained an important religious centre until the 6th century, when it was damaged during periods of instability and invasion. Over time, the structure was abandoned and gradually buried beneath later development. Modern archaeological investigations uncovered the remains and led to an ambitious conservation project that transformed the site into a state-of-the-art museum. Today, elevated walkways allow visitors to view the mosaics from above while interactive displays explain the history of Christianity, Roman Philippopolis, and the archaeological discoveries made at the site.
The Great Basilica is widely regarded as one of the most important archaeological attractions in Bulgaria and serves as a key monument illustrating Plovdiv's role as a major urban, religious, and cultural centre during the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods.
