Dolmen of Dombate

The Dolmen of Dombate, located in Cabana de Bergantiños, is a Neolithic funerary monument considered the "cathedral of megalithism" in Galicia. With a polygonal chamber and a three-section corridor, the dolmen was used between 3800 B.C. and 2700 B.C., and is decorated with petroglyphs and geometric paintings in red and black. Excavated in the years 1987-1989, the site has undergone various interventions for its preservation. In 2011, a cover was completed to protect it from the elements, though the intervention was criticized for altering the original context. In 2014, the management of the dolmen passed to the Cabana de Bergantiños Council, but conservation problems arose in the constructed replica, leading to a request for a review of the state of the original paintings and the establishment of a visitor limit to preserve this important archaeological monument.
