Pilgrim trails in Tarvisio

This variant starting from Arnoldstein leads via Thörl Maglern and Coccau directly across the Austrian-Italian border, connecting both countries and the pilgrim routes in Carinthia with the extensive network of the Romea Strata. It follows the old Roman road between Aquileia and Virunum, the capital of the province Noricum, and was an important trade, transport, and pilgrim route in the Middle Ages. After Tarvisio, it ascends to the international pilgrimage center and sanctuary of Monte Lussari.

Ascent to the Dreiländereck to cross the border into Slovenia via the Wurzen Pass. Descent via Podkoren to Kranjska Gora.

From the lagoon of Grado you cross the eastern Friulian plain, the hills of Collio and through country roads and mountain paths you reach the high peaks of the Julian Alps.

The last and tenth stage from Valbruna to the destination of the Sanctuary on Mount Lussari is a dozen kilometers long.

We are on the main route of the Via Romea Strata from Tarvisio (Friuli Venezia Giulia) to Fucecchio (Tuscany) where the path joins the Via Francigena. The Friuli area is characterized by majestic waterways of great historical and cultural significance. There are very ancient religious and hospitality structures of high artistic value. In the refreshment places you will taste the specialties of the area especially the raw ham and characteristic wines.
