On the fourth stage of this Northern Way, we will face a mountain route and say goodbye to the sea until we reach Bilbao in a few days’ time. It is a lonelier stage than the others, as we will only pass through a small village and see some scattered farmhouses. Our recommendation for this stage is to stock up well on everything you need. At the end, upon entering Markina-Xemein, you can taste one of its most typical sweets: kokotes, delicious anise-flavoured rings.

The third stage of the Northern Way presents, right from the start, two possible options: either follow the seafront promenade through Getaria alongside the road, or take the mountain path, passing by the chapel of Santa Bárbara and enjoying its stunning views after a steep but short climb. Here, the first option is described. You can see the other one here. Both routes lead to Zumaia, a beautiful town with spectacular cliffs. From Zumaia, the route continues towards Elorriaga, where it splits again: to the left, the historic route continues via Itziar; to the right (as shown here), the route returns to the sea along the GR-121 to admire, among other things, the Sakoneta flysch. Whichever option you choose, upon arrival in Deba, the end of the stage, don’t miss the parish church of Santa María, with its Gothic portal that still retains traces of polychrome.
