The Via Vigilius follows in the footsteps of Bishop Vigilius of Trent, who was born in 355 and presumably died around 405 in the Rendena Valley.Vigilius was a missionary in the upper Adige Valley and in the area of Trent as far south as Lake Garda. Thanks to his efforts, new parishes and churches were built. Numerous churches and chapels in the mountains, as well as the little church in San Vigilio, still bear his name. When he went to Val Rendena and threw a statue of Saturn into the river Sarca, he aroused the wrath of the pagans, who killed him, using sticks and wooden clogs. His remains were then taken to Trento to be buried in the cathedral, which he had himself built and where they are still found today. Saint Vigilius is one of the patron saints of South Tyrol, Trentino and also the patron saint of mines. His name derives from Latin and means vigilant. The Bishop's footsteps can often be found along the Via Vigilius, such as the small church of San Vigilio at the mountain of the same name, the pilgrimage site Senale, the sanctuary of San Romedio, and then down the Via Villi, where the Bishop passed for the last time before arriving in Val Rendena.

The Via Vigilius follows in the footsteps of Bishop Vigilius of Trento, who was born around 355 and probably died in the Trentino Rendena Valley around 405. Vigilius mainly worked as a missionary in the upper Adige Valley and travelled the wider area around Trento as far as southern Lake Garda. Many new parishes were founded through his efforts and many sacred buildings were erected on his initiative. Numerous churches and mountain chapels, such as the little church on the Vigiljoch, still bear his name today. When he destroyed a statue of Saturn in the Rendena Valley, he was beaten to death with clubs and clogs by angry residents. Vigilius was buried in the cathedral he built in Trento, where an ornate reliquary can still be found.
St Vigilius is one of the patron saints of South Tyrol and Trentino, as well as the patron saint of mines. His name comes from Latin and means the vigilant one. Along the Via Vigilius, you will come across traces of the bishop time and again. You walk past the Vigiljocher church, stop off at the pilgrimage site of Our Lady of the Woods, pass the San Romedio monastery and descend at the end of the tour via Via Vili, which roughly follows the route that Bishop Vigilius of Trento took to Val Rendena, where he was then stoned to death.
